How to start a career in artificial intelligence in 2021

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are already shaping our future, and the demand for talented engineers is skyrocketing. According to Market Research Future report, the machine learning market is expected to be worth almost $ 31 billion by 2024.

At SkillUp 2021, Nitin Gupta, chief technology officer for digital innovations at India Today and mentor and alumni of Great Learning, spoke in detail about artificial intelligence as a career.

With 14 years of experience in engagement and delivery, technical program management, and agile software development, Gupta has worked with companies like Lenskart and Senior World. He also co-founded Zercross, a mobile and web apps startup.

AI applications

Artificial intelligence has had an impact on all sectors. Gupta believes most AI innovations are happening in the research and development labs of big tech companies like Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, and Microsoft.

AI has applications in areas such as:

  • Health care
  • Business
  • Education
  • Autonomous vehicles
  • Social media
  • Travel and tourism
  • Create a better world

Gupta later riffed on a few subsets of artificial intelligence, including natural language processing (NLP), computer vision, and more.

Gupta also talked about the lifecycle of an AI project for a typical organization:

  • Data Engineering: Prepares data and transforms data into formats other team members can use.
  • Modeling: Finds patterns in the data that can help a business predict the outcomes of various decisions, business risks, and opportunities, or determine cause and effect relationships.
  • Deployment: Takes a data stream, combines it with a model, and tests the integration before putting the model into production.
  • Business analysis: Evaluates the performance and business value of a deployed model and adjusts accordingly to maximize benefits or abandon unproductive models.
  • AI infrastructure: Builds and maintains reliable, fast, secure and scalable software systems to help those working in data engineering, modeling, deployment and business analysis.

Based on these tasks, Gupta highlighted various roles in the field such as data scientists, machine learning engineer, data analysts, software engineer – ML, machine learning researcher and l software engineer, among others.

“While there is a lot of overlap with the type of tasks each of these individual roles handles, the breadth of skills required for each task complements itself.”

Citing the difference between machine learning engineers and data scientists, Gupta said ML engineers need more practical data engineering, modeling, deployment and AI infrastructure. In contrast, the role of data scientist focuses on tasks such as data engineering, modeling and business analysis.

“Salaries in IA and ML job profiles are higher compared to other positions, including full-stack, back-end and front-end engineers or native engineers running Android or iOS. However, the salary scale also depends on various factors such as training, interview process, skills and experience, among others, ”Gupta explained.

Citing the Indeed report, from 2016 to 2018, Gupta said the demand for artificial intelligence jobs has increased several times year on year (year-over-year).

Gupta said that the average annual salaries of machine learning engineers and data scientists are much higher than those of DevOps engineers, software engineers and web developers. In addition, he said machine learning and data scientists are currently among the top 20 emerging jobs in the world.

In India, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR and Mumbai are the top three locations for AI / ML jobs, followed by Hyderabad, Pune and Chennai, Gupta shared.

“Always be curious because it will help you in the long run,” Gupta concluded, saying AI will remain at the heart of technological innovation and business growth in the future.
