Jeff Csoka of Greenwich, graduate of West Point, promoted to colonel in the New York Army National Guard

GREENWICH — Greenwich resident Jeff Csoka was promoted to colonel in the New York Army National Guard in a May 15 ceremony at the Camp Smith training site near Peekskill, NY

Csoka, a graduate of the US Military Academy at West Point who served in Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan and Kuwait, is the commander of the 106th Regional Training Institute. The unit coordinates and organizes the training of National Guard soldiers.

Csoka graduated from West Point in 1997, served in the active U.S. Army from 1997 to 2006 with the 1st Infantry Division, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Officer Candidate School, and Airborne Training Brigade. Rangers at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. His active duty assignments include Rifle Platoon Leader, Company General Manager, Officer Instructor and Company Commander.

He deployed to Bosnia in 1999 and Iraq in 2003-04 while on active duty.


Since joining the New York Army National Guard in 2009, Csoka has held various staff and leadership positions with the 1st Battalion, 69th Infantry Regiment, combat of the 27th Infantry Brigade, 53rd Digital Liaison Detachment and 42nd Infantry Division. He served as the commander of the 2nd Battalion, 108th Infantry Regiment from 2017 to 2019.

He deployed to Afghanistan as part of a Stability and Transition Team as a Senior Advisor and Chief of Security Force Assistance working with the Afghan Army in 2012. He served in Kuwait as as an operations officer for the 42nd Infantry Division in 2020 when the division commanded Task Force Spartan Shield, the military force assigned to the Middle East.

Csoka has been commanding the 106th RTI since 2019.

His military award includes Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Medal of Honor, Army Merit Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal , the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, the Army Overseas Ribbon, and the NATO Medal. He also holds the Combat Infantryman Badge, Expert Infantryman Badge, Air Assault Badge, Basic Parachutist Badge, and the coveted Ranger Tab.

Csoka works as the Director of Facilities Construction and Procurement for Columbia University in New York. He and his wife Sarah live in Greenwich with their children, sons Alexander, 6, and Julian, 4, and daughter Ilona, ​​17.

Bucknell Honors Dean’s List Graduates and Students

A number of local students are among nearly 900 graduates of the Class of 2022 from Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania.

Additionally, Bucknell honored local students who were named to the Dean’s List for outstanding academic achievement during the spring semester of the 2021-22 academic year by achieving a 3.5 or higher grade point average on a scale of 4.0.

The honored students, along with their degree and major, if applicable, are: Cos Cob Residents, Gerty Hisler, 2024, Arabic and Arab World Studies; Anna Keaveney, 2024, political science; and Margaux Vaccari, 2022, political science.

Old Greenwich Honors Students are John Colbert, 2022, Computer Science; and Christina Lawrence, 2022, psychology.

And the Greenwich honors students are Lulu Brauer, 2025, Mathematical Economics; Molly Bugniazet, 2023, sociology; Seve Calderini, 2022, environmental engineering; Billy Carangelo, 2025, undeclared; Nick Daetwiler, 2022, international relations; Tarquin Hanson, 2023, political science; James Howe, 2023, computer engineering; and Bems James, 2022, creative writing in English.

Also from Greenwich, the honorees are Katie Kulesh, 2024, business analytics; Ethan Lange, 2025, undeclared management; Jenna Marinaccio, 2024, economy; Sterling Mock, 2025, undeclared; Ash Padmanaban, 2022, accounting and financial management; Christian Ruf, 2022, political science; and Gaby Wakim, 2023, political science.

Greenwich students graduated from colleges

A number of Greenwich students have graduated from different colleges across the country. Some of these graduates are listed below.

Pierce Ornstein of Greenwich recently graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the College of Charleston in Charleston, SC Ornstein was among more than 1,450 students who graduated from the College of Charleston this spring.

From the University of Vermont in Burlington, Riley Howe of Cos Cob graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Community Entrepreneurship and Trevor Disbennett of Greenwich graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science in May. They were among about 3,332 graduates, including 2,558 bachelors, 515 masters, 131 doctorates and 118 medical graduates at the start of May.

Greenwich’s Alice Murray Belshaw graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Southern University in Sewanee, Tennessee, in May

Charles Pottow of Greenwich, who majored in chemical engineering, earned a bachelor’s degree in May from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. Nearly 1,200 undergraduate degrees were awarded at the university’s 153rd commencement ceremony.

Cos Cob’s Riley Ellsworth graduated magna cum laude from Nazareth College with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a minor in biology at the 95th Annual Commencement Ceremony at the Golisano Training Center campus in Rochester, NY on May 14.

Eve Kazarian of Greenwich graduated with a bachelor of science degree from Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California on May 15, majoring in computer science and graduating with high honors.

Matthew Dericco of Cos Cob graduated from Hofstra University in Hempstead, NY in December 2021 earning a BBA/MS in Information Systems.
