Hip-hop fans were treated to something extra special on Friday March 6 when a new album from Lil Uzi Vert appeared out of nowhere around noon. Now, just over a week after appearing on streaming platforms and digital download stores, the set has conquered the Billboard 200 with one of the biggest sums of single images of 2020.
Lil Uzi Vert’s new album Eternal grip opens at # 1 on the Billboard 200 with 288,000 offset equivalent units. This number includes 9,000 actual purchases and 278,000 equivalent streaming units, themselves made up of 400 million plays on sites like Spotify and Apple Music.
Eternal grip is Lil Uzi Vert’s second hit parade in the All Genres chart, keeping his perfect record when it comes to appropriate albums. In 2017, his first album luv is raging 2 also started at No.1. Prior to that, he placed several commercial mixtapes somewhere on the Billboard 200, although none of them came close to # 1 on the charts.
The rapper’s new album, owner of the charts, was previewed by two singles, both labeled as bonus tracks on set. The first was “Futsal Shuffle 2020”, which placed in the top five of the Hot 100 at the end of 2019, but it didn’t stick around for long, dropping in the count pretty quickly. A few days before the unveiling of Lil Uzi Vert Eternal grip, he dropped “That Way”, which interpolates the 1999 Backstreet Boys smash “I Want It That Way”. This song opened at No. 21 on the chart and could climb again when the Hot 100 is renewed, partly depending on its release date and also because millions of people have rushed to release the album in its entirety, including this track.
Lil Uzi Vert’s surprise release apparently steals the show from Jhené Aiko, who shared his new album Chilombo the same day. Her latest solo effort hits the Billboard 200 at No.2, and if the unexpected entirety of one of the industry’s most popular rappers hadn’t arrived when she did, she would have earned her first frontman on the list.
Just a week after his first fall Eternal grip, Lil Uzi Vert once again shocked fans by output the value of an entire album of new material. He called the project Lil Uzi Vert Vs The World 2, and although it is considered to be something of a mixtape, these 14 new tracks are only available on the deluxe edition of his latest album, which has now been renamed Eternal Atake (Deluxe) – LUV vs. The World 2.
