Three to Captain Women’s Basketball in 21-22

TROY, NY – The Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) women’s basketball team will be led by a trio of senior student-athletes for the 2021-22 season, head coach John greene announced. Tina Heer, Brielle sharry and Emily Vallee are the team captains of the Engineers, which open Friday night at Springfield College in Massachusetts.

One center, Heer (Littleton, MA / Parker Charter) has played 46 games in his career, including 27 as a starter. In her last campaign, 2019-20 (the 2020-21 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic), she started 27 of the 29 games played, averaging 1.5 points and 2, 5 rebounds in 15.1 minutes per game. She had 17 blocked shots, which puts her second on the team. In her first year, the civil engineering major played 17 games, pulling off 28 rebounds.

Sharry (Ridgewood, NJ / Ridgewood), a goaltender, is the most experienced returner for RPI, having played 49 games. She played 29 in sophomore, registering 4.2 points and 3.7 rebounds in 19.3 minutes. She had 42 assists, including 15 games with at least two, 11 blocked shots and 33 steals. A graduate in industrial engineering and management, Sharry averaged 3.6 points with 2.7 rebounds in 17.8 minutes per game in her first year. She was Liberty League Rookie of the Week once and ECAC Division III Northern Rookie of the Month in December 2018. She also earned Liberty League All-Academic recognition.

A graduate in biochemistry and biophysics, Vallee (Greenwich, NY Schuylerville) played 12 games in sophomore and 23 in freshman. She scored 42 points with 30 rebounds averaging 10.9 minutes per game in 2018-19 and totaled 48 points with 39 rebounds, four assists and nine steals. A two-time Liberty League All-Academic winner, she also competes in Rensselaer’s outdoor track team as a jumper.

After their game against Pride Friday (7 p.m.), the Engineers head to John Jay College on November 10 before heading to Maine to compete in the Bates Classic Tip-Off on November 19 and 20. The RPI home opener takes place on November 30 against SUNY Delhi (7pm).
